A Just-Right Room that Fits the Bill

Because of his refusal to be anything less than a servant, Bill Stokes drew people to him, especially the college students he gave his heart to as director of Louisiana Tech’s Wesley Foundation from 1957 until his retirement in 1988.

When he passed away in the spring of 2020 at age 95, he left behind thousands of handshakes and smiles and friends forever loyal to his heart and memory.

Saturday at the corner of Railroad Avenue and College Street on Tech’s campus, in an unassuming brick building he turned into a second home for so many of us when we were struggling with acne and advanced math and advanced life, a couple hundred of us met, finally, to share memories and to dedicate the Bill Stokes Room at Wesley.

The delay was due to circumstances, but the feeling, being in that building with people who knew and loved Bill, was familiar.

This was a man who never met a stranger, but a lot of strangers met him, whether they wanted to or not. And then, forever in his world, they would never be strangers again. Not if Bill had anything to do with it.

And he made it his mission to have everything to do with it. You could not be on campus very long without meeting Bill. He made it his mission to be Jesus’ hands and feet, to reach out to kids trying to find their way and to give them a home in his heart.

“A Southern gentleman,” said Vicki McGuire, whose father Doug pioneered Wesley Foundation work in 1937 during his college years, became a minister, and was a best friend to Bill when the 32-year-old young preacher from Mississippi showed up in Ruston to follow his calling of working with students. Vicki can’t remember a time she didn’t know Bill.

A lot of us felt that way.

“His outgoing, friendly personality made him irresistible,” she said. “I think that he reached out to everyone describes him as much as anything. When someone reaches out to you, that intentionally, you have to respond. You like people who like you and care about you. That’s how he made you feel.

“I was amazed that he could come up with everyone’s name and hometown,” she said. “He was a master at that.”

He was. Because he cared.

His memory and genuine concern must have been something God gifted him with to increase Bill’s impact on so many of us. We weren’t just students. We were Bill’s students, Bill’s kids, each of us one of his projects. Because of him, lots of lives were changed in what is now the Bill Stokes Room. I witnessed it more than once.

What Bill did as much as anything was bring people together. Sometimes, that was romantically. (A couple dozen people at Wesley Saturday were introduced to each other by Bill, then married by him.)  But mostly, he got students from all sorts of backgrounds together and, somehow, he got us to believe we needed each other, that we were better and fuller, more ourselves in the moment, together.

He was a friend and a friend maker, a deeply missed man of truth and goodness, a man who leaves behind not only a room but also a heart that always had room for us.

The Saga Continues: Elon Musk Flips the Twitter Bird

By: Royal Alexander

“They said I couldn’t buy Twitter.  Then they wouldn’t disclose bot info. Now they want to force me to buy Twitter in court.  Now they have to disclose bot info in court.” Elon Musk

Please recall that Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest man, had proposed to buy Twitter.

This suggestion was rejected immediately and forcefully.  Twitter was so opposed to the purchase it stated it would put in place a corporate “poison pill” so as to make the potential purchase and/or takeover by Musk so unattractive that he would abandon his plan to acquire it.

Twitter’s corporate legal counsel then reminded the Twitter brass that they have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders.  After that, Twitter became magically more amenable to the potential sale.

Musk then proposed a $43 billion purchase of the company and reasonably assumed Twitter would honestly disclose the number of “real” human Twitter users, excluding all the fake spam bots.

In other words, Musk demanded full transparency as a pre-condition of the proposed purchase in order to determine the actual number of Twitter users and, therefore, the monetizable value of the purchase.

Well, Twitter still will not disclose the actual number of real, human Twitter users.  Thus, Musk has now indicated he will walk away from the sale.

But, if the Twitter sale doesn’t go through the Twitter brass are all likely to be sued for breaching their fiduciary duty to stakeholders by denying them the generous return on their Twitter stock investment that would occur as a result of the Musk purchase.

That possibility now has Twitter in a panic.

So, Twitter has now sued to force the sale to occur!  However, now, legal discovery rules will force Twitter to turn over all relevant information, including the number of fake spam bots!

Twitter is caught in a legal web of its own weaving.

The irony is that, though founded as a neutral platform promoting freedom of speech, Twitter’s hostility to the Musk proposal derived from Musk’s intention to allow ALL speech on Twitter as opposed to Twitter’s current practice of censoring and suppressing certain (virtually always conservative) speech.

Musk sought to purchase and then “free” Twitter so every tweet can be heard, read, and discussed. What a concept! How terrible!

What Musk is really saying when he describes himself as a “free speech absolutist” is that he strongly supports our First Amendment and its guarantee of free expression.

Musk believes in the constitutional principle that the answer to speech, even speech that we hate, is not censorship but, rather, more speech and substantive debate in an honest search for the truth.

Musk has observed that Twitter serves as America’s “de facto public town square” where ideas should be constantly advanced, exchanged, opposed, and then either become accepted or be pushed aside.  That’s the very definition of the “marketplace of ideas” the U.S. Supreme Court has used as its legal standard in free speech cases to define and illustrate the broad spectrum of core political speech the 1st Amendment protects.

Conversely, recall that Twitter banned President Trump while the murderous Iranian ayatollah, the violent and hateful Louis Farrakhan, the Wuhan/Chinese and American China Virus liars and propagandists, Porn Hub (the largest host of child porn and rape videos in the world) and Planned Parenthood (which has proudly performed most abortions in the U.S.) have been allowed to remain on Twitter.

These are examples of censorship Musk vehemently opposes given their negative effect on free speech.  Musk has stated “I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy.”

Musk’s attempted purchase of Twitter is a major response to the suppression of free speech by Big Tech which is promoting culturally toxic wokeness that attacks the fundamental principles of our Constitution.

As Musk says, “Wokeness is a mind virus … it is arguably one of the biggest threats to modern civilization.”  Musk believes that “at its heart, wokeness is divisive, exclusionary and hateful.  It basically gives mean people a reason, it gives them a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue.”

I’m hopeful Musk’s tactical moves are merely part of a strategy to lower Twitter’s stock price prior to his purchase of the company.

May his effort be a triumph for freedom of expression, without which our way of life cannot endure.

Winn Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Business of the Week – Pretty Baked

Winn Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Board Member Destiny Stroud interviewed owner Niki Etheridge of Pretty Baked to give you some interesting background information on her popular and everyday growing business. Here is what she had to say. A must-read!

“Cooking has always been my passion. As a child, my mother helped nurture this love, always allowing time to experiment in the kitchen. I began the first proper step in my journey in 2005 with a Cottage bakery out of my home. I baked on and off until 2012, then sadly hung up my apron. My dream in life was to own a restaurant or bakery, but the fear of doing that in a small town kept me from pursuing it. I started baking again in 2017, and it consumed me every waking moment of the weekend; and finally, I felt at peace again!

In May 2018, I decided to take the plunge, and we began the process of opening Pretty Baked! After our first opening that November on ‘Open House’ night, we’ve spent the last four years figuring out what works best for us. My favorite part of the job is coming up with new recipes; I love researching, watching shows, and coming up with a taste or theme to match the seasons! Our menu changes every few months to keep things exciting and provide our customers with a bit of local variety!

Now our newest venture is the expansion of Pretty Baked! We’ve purchased the old Bulk Oil Building with plans to have a 70-seat full-service restaurant and bar open sometime early to mid-2023. We cannot wait to have an even better menu, drinks, and brunch to offer! So stay tuned for Pretty Baked’s next tasty development!”

The Family Church Hosts Ladies Rally

By: Kaycie Kile
WPJ Reporter

The Family Church, located at 1806 Maple St., opened its doors to all the lovely local ladies of Winnfield (and even a few lucky gentlemen!) for its Ladies Rally this past Friday, June the 15th, from 7:00 to 9:30 that evening.

Guest speaker, Mickey Mangun, captivated her audience from start to finish with her melodious keyboard work, gentle manner, and impactful message. She spoke of Habakkuk, a biblical prophet who questioned God about the evil he witnessed continuing to prosper through the world. Habukkuk, meaning “to embrace” in Hebrew, brings insight to the misconception that those of faith sit and patiently wait. Our human flesh requires an answer, and as humans, even the most worthy, fall short to doubt. Mangun illustrated the need to ’embrace’ the things dispatched to destroy us, for losing sight of God is to lose sight of his goodness. The night, ending in both evident emotion and fellowship, was one not soon to be forgotten by those in attendance!

Special thanks to Sister Marty Hines, The Family Church’s first lady, for overseeing and organizing the rally, Mickey Mangun for sharing her time, message, and other members/volunteers from The Family Church that contributed to the rally’s success! We hope to see Sister Mickey again soon!
