Last Friday the Winnfield Tigers made a drive to Jackson Parish to take on the Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers. Winnfield made an excellent showing in the game coming out on top 27-0.
During the first quarter, Jonesboro Hodge had possession of the ball when Damascus “Tank” Lewis and Javen Jackson tackled the Tigers receiver which caused him to fumble the ball. The ball was then picked up by Tank Lewis who took the ball all the way to the 16 yard line. Soon after, Gabe Wren caught a pass from quarterback Nickalas Mockosher where he ran to the end zone scoring the Winnfield Tigers their first touchdown of the game. Afterward, a kick by Angel Lindsey brought the score to 7-0.
In the second quarter, Tank Lewis intercepted another pass and made it to the 45 yard line. Then, Jaylon Jackson received a very successful pass which brought the Winnfield Tigers from the 43 yard line to the 20 yard line. A number of plays later, and nearing the end zone, Winnfield’s offensive line made a push allowing Jeremy Mammon to score the Tigers another touchdown which was followed up by a two point conversion.
In the third quarter, Tank Lewis would reach the end zone bringing the score to 21-0. Finally, on a 4th down Gabe Wren was preparing to punt the ball deep in his own territory but there was a bad snap. He quickly recovered and drove it all the way into the end zone bringing the score to 27-0.
With Winnfield in the lead, the defense held Jonesboro-Hodge very well. In particular, Javonta Grisby, and John Micheal Pickett who consistently made big tackles. They broke up plays, drove receivers out of bounds, and stopped the advancement of the play on numerous occasions, protecting the work of their offense.
“Our kids played extremely hard,” stated head coach Jay Watson. “They played through some pain with some beat up players and I’m proud of that. Gabe Wren had an outstanding game with a big catch for a touchdown and used a dropped punt attempt and got a lot of touchdowns.” He also said “We need to clean up a lot of missed blocks, but our defense played extremely well. We need to clean up special team errors.” Finally he said “The coaches had a good game plan. The way the kids rallied around each other, overcoming some third and longs. It was fun to watch them play tonight.”
Next Friday the Tigers will play on their own turf at Stokes Walker Stadium at 7 p.m. against Caldwell. The Caldwell Spartans currently stand 0-1 in their record. Consider coming out to support the Tigers during their first home game of the season! The weather should be partially cloudy at a comfortable 80 degrees.
