As students across Winn Parish prepare to return to school on Friday, August 7, Winn Parish Sheriff Josh McAllister is urging all motorists to exercise extra caution and help ensure a safe start to the new school year.

“With the start of a new school year comes an increase in school buses, children walking to bus stops, and heavier traffic during the morning and afternoon hours,” Sheriff McAllister said. “The safety of our children is a responsibility we all share. A few extra moments of patience can make all the difference.”

The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers of the following important school bus safety laws:

• Stop whenever a school bus is displaying flashing red lights and its stop arm is extended, unless you are traveling on a divided highway separated by a physical barrier.
• Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus that is actively loading or unloading students.
• Slow down and remain alert in school zones and near bus stops.
• Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of cell phones, and stay focused on the road.
• Watch carefully for children, who may unexpectedly cross the street or enter the roadway.
