Winn Parish Police Jury Extends Sale of Alcohol to Holidays During Regular Meeting

Winn Parish Police Jury held it’s regular monthly meeting Monday, November 16, 2020 at 5:00 PM.

District 31 Louisiana State Senator Louie Bernard presented an accommodation and a resolution from the Louisiana State Senate to McManus Timber Company in recognition for their contributions to the timber industry in Winn Parish community and the state of Louisiana.

In a motion made by District 2 Juror, Deionne Carpenter and seconded by District 1 Juror Phillip Evans the Winn Parish Police Jury made it legal to sell alcohol in Winn Parish on Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day. The motion was passed with a tie breaking vote by WPPJ President Josh McAllister. District 4, 5 and 6 Jurors Tammy Griffin, Kirk Miles and Author Robinson voted against the motion with district 1, 2 and 7 Jurors Carpenter, Evans and McCartney voting for. Both Griffin and Robinson spoke out strongly against the motion.

“I do not feel it should be the government’s involvement to punish or hinder a small business, especially in this parish,” said McAllister during his remarks.

In an amendment to the agenda Griffin added a motion that the Jury go into executive session to discuss a letter received from District Judge Jacque Derr.

During his closing statement McAllister stated that the Jury is monitoring the positive COVID cases in the parish and that the parish is being proactive as opposed to reactive. He encouraged families to do everything they can to stay safe and to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.
