Friday night the Winnfield Tigers lost a devastating game against the Red River Bulldogs. Despite their best efforts all throughout the night, the score ended 50-6.
Despite the indication of the scoreboard, last Friday the Tigers brought their best efforts to the opponent’s field. This started with Javen Jackson making a touchdown preventing tackle early in the first quarter. This was followed just a number of plays later with a big return of 40 yards by Damascus “Tank” Lewis.
Then, proving that the Bulldogs would have to earn every point, Lewis broke up a pass headed to the end zone preventing a two point conversion. Then Lewis made another big return covering 33 yards. Following this, back to back first downs by Gabe Wren and quarterback Nickalas Mockosher were completely continuously moving the Tigers down the field. Later, Lewis caught a 25 yard throw for yet another first down.
After this, the defense came together and prevented another two point conversion. Then, frustratingly for the Bulldogs, John Micheal Pickett brought the Red River carrier to a complete stop preventing him from entering the end zone for yet another two point conversion. This was directly followed with a run by Lewis covering 15 yards into the end zone for a touchdown right before the game ended.
“Our three turnovers in the red zone in the first half killed us,” said Tigers head coach Jay Watson. “After our first two drives we moved well offensively but we couldn’t capitalize. The two long touchdowns on turnovers sealed the deal and it compounded after that.” Then he added “we have to regroup in the last game.”
Next week the Winnfield Tigers will play in Sibley against the Lakeside High School Rams who currently stand 7-2 in their record this season. The weather will be 65 degrees Fahrenheit with a 40 percent chance of rain. Consider coming out to join the Winnfield Tigers!
