Shelly McFarland, a Winnfield businesswoman, has announced her intent to run for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) District 4 seat. BESE is the state’s top public school board.
“As a businesswoman, mother of two public school children, and public school volunteer for nearly 20 years, I know what our students and teachers need to help them succeed. I am excited to bring fresh ideas and my experience as a business owner and parent to BESE. Our Louisiana students deserve to leave high school prepared to embrace opportunities they encounter and to create opportunities for their future. I hope I can earn your support,” McFarland said via her campaign website.
McFarland is the Vice President of McFarland Timber in Winnfield. She lives in Winnfield with her husband, State Representative Jack McFarland. They have two children Jackson, and Macy.
The 11 member board is comprised of elected members and three members appointed by the governor. BESE District 4 covers Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, Vernon, Webster, and Winn Parishes.
Governor Edwards will set a special election sometime next year to fill the seat that will be vacated when current member Tony Davis, R-Natchitoches, resigns on Jan 20th. Davis has stated he is leaving his seat because of expanding career job responsibilities.
