Jury Tries Again for Capital Improvements Funding Help on 14 Parish Roads

The Winn Parish Police Jury will try again to get state Capital Improvements funding for road projects around the parish.  The request approved at the lawmakers’ October 21 meeting will be made to the 2025-26 session of the state legislature.

Roadways included are Eugene Garrett, Frank White, Brownville, Aunt Marie’s, Old Alexandria, L. Sullivan, Welcome Home, Mars Hill Church, Collins Camp, Louisiana, Arkansas, Lum Fox, Bethlehem and part of Gum Springs.  Juror Stanley Garrett asked that Blewer Road be removed from the request list.

The jury acted on a request by juror Darrell Franks to take Ridgeway and Ridgeview roads into the parish road system.  Franks also took the opportunity to thank jurors for their prayer and support following the death of his father.

The jury approved the appointment of Scotty Lawson as constable for Ward 10 following the resignation of Joseph Owens.

Road Supt. Perry Holmes thanked the body for purchase of new doors at the parish barn that “we can now open to let in the cool breeze.  We couldn’t do that before.”  He said that following a state directive, the road crew cleared weeds and brush from “some 50-something structures” around the parish prior to the state beginning annual bridge inspections.

Holmes also advised that $4,800 had been spent on repairs of a backhoe that was down, but additional repairs added $2,400 to the cost.  “That’s not so much as a new one but we can’t do our work without it.”  He replied to a question that the work involved could not have been done by his own crew.

He also told members that he’s had requests from the School Board for repairs on several school bus turn-arounds.  “We always try to help and usually charge for materials only.”

The jury also reported that the public is invited to a “Stop the Bleed” training session that will be conducted by Winn Parish Medical Center personnel on Thursday, November 14, at 2 p.m. in the Police Jury Meeting Room, Courthouse.
