Winn Parish Medical Center will be hosting a “Stop The Bleed” course on Monday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Winn Wellness Clinic waiting room. That address is 301 West Boundary Ave.
In the course, participants will learn techniques on how to save a life before someone bleeds out. Seeing the need to bring this how-to information to the public came in the wake of a mass shooting. But the reality of its practicality is right here in rural north Louisiana. “Hunting, fishing, clearing land, at a wreck scene, in the workshop, even in the kitchen…the occasions for a serious accident are always out there. If nothing is done to a seriously bleeding wound before the patient gets to the hospital, it may be too late,” explained RN Donice Fletcher.”
She explained that the “Stop the Bleed” program was created to show regular citizens that they can help prevent traumatic blood loss, the No. 1 preventable cause of death. “Any lay person can learn how to use a tourniquet or a cloth of any kind for a pack and pressure to slow blood loss. We want folks to know that they can become an immediate responder to act before the first responders arrive. And in doing so, save lives.”
The informative course will be taught by Donice Fletcher, RN; Dr. Mark Shelton and Tony Acosta, PA.
To find the Wellness Clinic, enter through the double glass doors to the right of the crosswalk when headed toward the ER. Above the doors is a banner that says “Winn Wellness Clinic.”
This course is being offered free of charge and is open to the public.
