Early cold temperatures Saturday morning meant a lot of folks stayed home. Winnfield’s Mardi Gras Parade was short. The crowd was slim. But those who lined Main Street were rewarded for the participation. There was no shortage of beads, candy and throws.
Because the crowd was light, those throwing from their scaled-down floats could be more kid-specific and there were hardly any broken beads or smashed candies on Main Street after the final police car rolled through. Morning broke just above freezing but by parade time that was pushed back to 11 a.m., the temperature was about 40 and moving towards a 50 degree high.
Police barricades cordoned off the block of the Methodist Church and Farmers Market where food vendors and fun activities were set up. Children found a Mardi Gras mask-making table plus a little Magic Show while adult activities were set up under the roof of the Farmers Market. The Winnfield Middle School band was on hand to provide some music.
