product is service. Rotarians provide community service to both local and

17th Annual Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship Sponsor Opportunity Ends March 15th

Trista LeAnne Tyler who passed away on June 20, 2003, at the age of 17 in an automobile accident was the 3 pt. shooter for the Atlanta High School’s girls’ basketball team. Her shots were known for never using the backboard – hitting “nothing but net.”  Trista also loved The Wizard of Oz, so this year’s Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship T-shirt is incorporating both. The shirt will feature a yellow brick road circle on a light blue shirt. Inside the circle will be a silhouette of a girl taking a basketball shot wearing red sneakers and a red glittery #14.

All proceeds from sponsors and shirt sales will go to the Trista Tyler Scholarship fund that awards a $500 scholarship to deserving graduates at each of the four Winn Parish Schools. To date the Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded $101,500 to 203 high school seniors.

To make a contribution and be recognized as a sponsor on this year’s t-shirt you can make checks payable to the Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship Fund, (Federal Tax ID #72-0124970) c/o Karen Tyler, 264 Mars Hill Church Rd, Atlanta, La. 71404. For more information, call Karen at (318) 715-1442 or 628-9739.  Deadline to be recognized on the shirt is March 15, 2020. All sponsors receive a complimentary shirt.

Your participation is greatly appreciated not only in honoring Trista’s memory but also in helping students pursue their academic dreams.

Capitol Briefing From District 22 State Rep. Gabe Firment

The 2020 Regular Session of the Louisiana State Legislature will convene at noon on Monday, March 9th and will adjourn no later than 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1st. As a newly elected state representative, I have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the legislative session as the opportunity to truly begin the work of turning our state around and bringing hope and renewed optimism to the good people of Louisiana. Since taking office on January 13th, I have attended meetings and talked to constituents from across our district – from Hall Summit to Jena and all points in between – in an effort to understand the cares and concerns of the citizens and leaders of District 22.

As of last Friday 1,120 bills have been pre-filed by legislators, with a huge variety of issues being addressed, including the legalization of recreational marijuana, abolition of the death penalty, lessening restrictions against shooting feral hogs, and naming of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly as the official butterfly of the state. Although legislation regarding tort/insurance reform and fiscal responsibility appear to be the hot topics this session, I am also extremely interested in a few bills addressing important constitutional and moral issues currently being debated in our state. I am a proud supporter and co-author of HB686 by Rep. Danny McCormick(R-Oil City), a “constitutional carry” bill that would allow the concealed carry of a weapon without a permit. I am also fully supportive of legislation authored by Sen. Beth Mizell(R-Franklinton) and Rep. Beryl Amedee(R-Houma) that would ban biological males from identifying as females and competing in girl’s high school sports.

I would encourage everyone interested in the legislative process to check out the House of Representatives website at https://house.louisiana.gov where you can get daily and weekly schedules, watch videos from committee rooms and the House floor, track individual bills, and see how each representative votes. Of course, I will also be posting updates and comments about the session on Facebook @GabeFirment22 and at least occasionally through Twitter @FirmentGabe.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the passing in recent days of two noteworthy citizens of District 22. Mr. El Ray Lemoine of Montgomery, LA passed away on February 29th at the age of 78. Mr. Lemoine was a true public servant and beloved by the citizens of Grant Parish and beyond, having served as Clerk of Court in Grant Parish for over 39 years. On the morning of February 28th I was notified that my friend Everett “Crusty” Toler of Jena had suddenly passed away at the age of 71. “Crusty” was a fixture around Jena known for his devotion to the Jena Giants, big heart, and love of all things political.

When I announced in the summer of 2018 that I was running for state representative, I was informed by numerous Grant Parish politicos that I had to immediately head to the north part of the parish and speak with Mr. El Ray Lemoine. I was given similar advice in LaSalle Parish, and quickly scheduled an appointment to meet with Mr. Crusty and the “Ole Boys” Club at the Brisket House. Although I did not get to know either of these men as well as I would have liked, there is no doubt that District 22 lost a couple of fine Christian gentlemen who loved their families and communities and left proud legacies of service and sacrifice. If there is an “Ole Boys” Club in heaven I’m sure that Mr. El Ray and Mr. Crusty have already had many a conversation about baseball, tractors, LSU, hunting, fishing, and just maybe a little politics.

Miles with the Beach Boys

The Beach Boys are one of the most successful bands of all time with many top ten hits including, “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Surfer Girl,” “Be True To Your School,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Dance, Dance, Dance,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “California Girls,” “Barbara Ann,” “Sloop John B,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Good Vibrations,” “Rock and Roll Music,” and “Kokomo.” The original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Brian Wilson wrote or co-wrote the majority of the group’s hit songs, but the group also recorded other people’s songs on occasion.

In 1967, an up-and-coming singer-songwriter named Miles began recording an album of his own hoping it would lead to a recording contract. In the following year, Dennis Wilson, the group’s drummer, met Miles and they quickly became friends. Their common interest was music. Within a short while, Miles moved into Dennis’s house. He was just one of a large group of hangers-on who lived in Dennis’s house. Pretty soon the Beach Boys included Miles into their inner circle. Miles wrote a folk song called “Cease to Exist” specifically for the Beach Boys. Dennis liked the song and told Miles he was interested in the Beach Boys recording it. Rather than taking credit for the song and earning potential royalties, Miles, always in need of money, sold all of his rights to the song to Dennis for an undisclosed amount of money.

In September, 1968, the Beach Boys reworked the song and transformed it from a folk song into a pop song more fitting their style. The band changed the name of the song from “Cease to Exist” to “Never Learn Not to Love.” The Beach Boys used the single as the B-Side to their rendition of “Bluebirds Over the Mountain.” Sole writing credit went, not to Miles, but to Dennis Wilson.

The Beach Boys released “Never Learn Not to Love” in December, 1968. Miles, who had little luck getting recognition for his other recordings, was enraged when he learned about all of the changes the Beach Boys had made to his song. Even though the song was not as commercially successful as many of their other songs, it still earned a fair amount of money. Miles claimed Dennis had cheated him out of his rights to the song, and, therefore, money the song generated. Miles was also angry that he was not credited for writing the song.

Miles’s music career never took off. Major record companies were not interested in distributing his music. In March, 1970, a minor record company called Awareness Records released Miles’s debut album. The album contained fourteen songs, all of which were written and recorded by Miles. It was a commercial failure. Through the years, several artists have covered songs from the album including Guns N’ Roses, Rob Zombie, Redd Kross, The Lemonheads, Crispin Glover, and Marilyn Manson with varying degrees of success. In 2006, ESP-DISK, a small record company which specialized in jazz and underground rock, re-released the original album on compact disc with the addition of twelve previously unreleased tracks. Again, the album was a commercially failure.

Had the events of August 8-10, 1969, gone differently, we may all be celebrating Miles’s music. For on that weekend, Miles orchestrated the brutal murders of Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Jay Sebring, Steven Parent, Sharon Tate and her unborn child, Leno LaBianca, and Rosemary LaBianca. Miles was the middle name of Charles Manson.

Stacey Friday Speaks to Kiwanis Club

Kiwanian Stacey Friday spoke to the Kiwanis club, Monday, March 9th. Her topic was cancer and cancer research which is a topic that she is very passionate about. In 2010 her mom and dad both died of cancer and her sister died of cancer a few years later. Stacey herself has cancer (tumor seeded at base of brain) but she has been NED (no evidence of disease) for 8 years. She, her sister and her dad all had melanoma. Her Dad was part of a clinical trial at MD Anderson but it did not work for him.

She believes in clinical trials because they are saving lives. Another treatment for melanoma is immunotherapy. Stacey takes a medication that targets the BRAF gene that she has. The medication costs $9000 per month. Through genetic testing targeted therapy is available for specific genes. She is concerned about her children and their heredity for melanoma. Genetic testing is also available to see if you have the gene that could lead to melanoma.

Stacey said know your doctors, don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion. Be aware and proactive about your health. She reads and studies about melanoma every day to see about new things that are available and what is coming. There are options today when there used to be no options.
Because Winnfield is no longer a city we do not qualify for Relay for Life. However there is a fund raiser that can be participated in called Stand Up to Cancer, which is a fundraiser for cancer research. Stacey said the American Cancer Society is very helpful with transportation, lodging and money for other expenses.

Stacey’s advice is to stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds. Those are the main culprits in melanoma.

Heart of Louisiana Human Society – Pet Adoption Highlight

Say Hello to Sibley. Sibley is unbelievably SWEET, great with other dogs of all sizes, and children. She is super affectionate and all this girl wants is to be loved on! Sibley is an approximately 2-3 yr old Dachshund/Rat Terrier Mix weighing 23 lbs, that was surrendered to the HLHS after being a stray for over 4 months.

Sibley, unfortunately, tested heart-worm positive. She received a Proheart injection and started on doxycycline for prevention. Heart-worm disease does not mean that Sibley can’t have a great quality of life and make a wonderful companion for many years to come! She will need an owner that will follow up on completing her treatment. Sibley is up to date on her vaccines, rabies, bordatella, de-wormed, spayed, and micro-chipped.

If you are interested in adopting Sibley, please contact Heart of Louisiana Humane Society on Facebook HLHS Facebook Page, by email hlhumanesociety@yahoo.com or by phone at (318) 413-9077.
