According to Chris Nevils 8th JDC District Attorney, an arrest was made in the killing of a family pet in Winnfield. “It’s taken a little time to make an arrest because we are waiting for evidence from the Louisiana Crime Lab,” said Nevils

On a Facebook post by the pet owner that has gone viral with the hashtag #justiceforkara, on May 31, 2020, their family pet named Kara was brutally killed in the family’s back yard in Winnfield. In the Facebook post, the owners initially thought that Kara was killed with a gun. It was later determined that she was killed by blunt force trauma. The post also alludes to video evidence. Per District Attorney Nevils, no such video of the crime in progress exists and absent video evidence the case required much more investigation than it would typically take.

According to sources, Michael Lance Gardner turned himself into the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office in connection to the crime. Gardner was booked on charges of felony cruelty to animals, felony theft, and trespassing and immediately bonded out with bond amount of $24,000. Gardner declined to comment when contacted by the WPJ.

The pet owner did not return request for comment.
