The Winnfield Rotary Club held its regular weekly meeting on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Lynda’s. Rotarian of the week, Mary Lou Blackley, presided over the meeting in the absence of President Jodi Taylor, and introduced not just one guest speaker but two.
The first speaker was Shyann Goodeaux Garner, the 2020 recipient of Winnfield Rotary’s inaugural Don Purser CLTCC scholarship. The scholarship is one of three awarded annually by Winnfield Rotary and is specifically designated for a student registered to attend the Huey Long campus of Central Louisiana Technical and Community College. It is named for long-time Rotary member Don Purser, director of CLTCC for many years. Shyann is the daughter of John and Ann Goodeaux, and wife of Gavin Garner, all of Winnfield. She is a Winnfield native, graduated from WSHS this past May, and will begin her course of study in the CLTCC Licenced Practical Nursing program on August 17. She has been interested in the medical field from her childhood, and hopes to pursue advanced nursing degrees after completing her LPN and working in her field.
The second guest speaker was Dawn Book of Urania, Louisiana, Assistant Director of Adult Education at CLTCC. Ms. Book spoke about a few of the programs of study at the local college which are quite robust, including the LPN program and the relatively new program in Forestry. She also mentioned the adult education program which assists students in passing the HiSET to get a the equivalent of a high school diploma, and said that students in that program can also take college courses while working toward the HiSET. CLTCC’s adult ed program also offers assistance in preparing for other major entrance exams such as the Graduate Record Examination.
The meeting was concluded with Rotary’s motto “Service above Self!”
