Letter from WPSB Superintendent

As many of you know, the Governor has closed public school buildings across the State for the rest of the school year. It is Winn Parish ‘s goal to provide direction and assistance for student learning under these circumstances. Currently, many educators and families are concerned about how we can ensure that students will learn content that they will miss with these school closures. The Winn Parish School System will maintain efforts to provide student learning opportunities for the remainder of the regularly scheduled school year. Our teachers and administrators will provide distance learning and paper based materials to all students during the closure. These learning opportunities will be coordinated from the student’s base school and the teaching methods may vary from school to school, teacher to teacher, and content to content. Parents should expect contact from their student’s teachers on a weekly basis. If contact is not made, parents may call the school Principal for assistance. Questions and /or concerns relating to providing opportunities for students should be directed to individual schools or the central office.

When our school facilities re-open in August for the 2020-2021 school year, it will be necessary to determine what specific areas of need exist for each student having missed the last few weeks of instruction. Emphasis will be given to identifying content standards in mathematics, reading, and writing where a student is non-proficient. Teachers will utilize the results of this diagnosis in determining which state standards must be taught before starting new grade level content.

Parents of seniors, please be assured our graduating seniors will be receiving graduation credentials on schedule. Diplomas, transcripts, and any other graduating credentials will be ready by the end of May. However, graduation exercises are postponed until we are given clearance to have assemblies. It is important to us for every graduating senior of 2020 to have official graduation ceremonies and celebration of their accomplishments.

Families are beginning to have meals shipped to their homes and these meals will continue to be shipped through the end of May. Every family who has signed for these free meals will receive a week’s supply of meals for breakfast and lunch delivered to their home through the district’s partnership with Healthy School Food Collaboration. This service is scheduled to begin on April 20, 2020.

The Winn Parish School System is working diligently during these unprecedented times to provide new, unique, and appropriate learning opportunities for our students and healthy meals while we are attempting to address everyone’s safety and well-being. This is not what our school system has traditionally done, however, working together we will be able to bridge the gap between COVID-19 closure and the return to our normal school settings and schedule. Thank you for being understanding and supporting of our efforts.
